Activity Based Therapy (ABT) is a form of physical rehabilitation that includes task specific practice and repetition. Activity Based Training focuses on recovery by providing activation of the neuromuscular system below the level of the lesion. This is our main program!
ABT at ReYu utilizes several techniques including but not limited to:
These are exercises that focus on the mind-body connection and initiation of responses from the client. This is not a passive range of motion. Goals are to increase neuromuscular activation, circulation and provide sensory feedback.
Core strength is the foundation of efficient movement. Without it, movements become significantly harder and often lead to compensation. Strengthening the core will be a key focus throughout every phase of recovery.
Weight-bearing through the long bones of the body is key to maintaining bone density and encouraging appropriate sensory input that allows the nervous system to appropriately reorganize. This can be done in standing, kneeling and even sitting with weight through the feet.
This can include crawling, cycling, and overground walking. These fcus on establishing a base of support and control of the hips during reciprocal movemnt. There are 3 levels to gait training:
Whole body vibration can have many benefits for neurorecovery and is used in combination with our main modalities. Vibration can help reduce spasticity and pain, improve motor function and strength, enhance balance and proprioception, and increase blood circulation. It is also beneficial for regulating the nervous system. Our various vibration plates can be used in seated, laying down, kneeling, hands and knees, and standing.
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is a therapeutic technique that involves the application of electrical currents to stimulate nerves and induce muscle contractions. It is used to improve muscle strength, motor control and coordination, range of motion, reduction of pain, spasticity management, and functional movements. This device delivers controlled electrical impulses to specific muscles or nerve pathways.
While using a body weight support step retraining device, we are able to work on gait training with clients. This allows individuals to walk with enough weight and sensory input through their feet to increase the weight bearing benefits and increase the amount of feedback the nervous system receives. This is done while preventing fall risks and other risks of injury. When walking in a rhythmic pattern, we are able to activate central pattern generators, which increases the activation of the muscles used to walk. This helps to retrain the neural pathways, promote motor learning and improve walking abilities.
